DJI Avata Review

The DJI Avata is the new high-end FPV drone from DJI, the Avata has already earned a reputation of being one of the best FPV (First Person View) drones you can get. DJI is one of the biggest producers in the drone market with some of the most successful drones.

The new Avata drone comes with a 4K camera mounted on a gimbal for excellent stabilization, the Avata is light and tough which makes you worry less about crashing it and breaking it, especially when flying with the DJI Goggles in first person.

The DJI Avata drone can record up to 4K/60fps and take pictures up to 48MP. The Avata uses a small gimbal for the camera which stabilizes the videos and produces better videos with your drone camera. 

For its image sensor, it uses a 1/1.7-inch CMOS which captures great image quality capable of 48MP. It records with a 10-bit D-Log color profile.

The camera on the drone can take pictures at 4000 x 3000 pixels and 3840 x 2160p video thanks to its sensor. It uses a 155° FOV lens.

The DJI Avata can go as far as 11 km max range with a max speed of 27 m/s in manual mode and 8 m/s in normal mode. It uses GPS + Galileo + BeiDou system to fly.

This drone also comes with rechargeable 15.4 V 5000 mAh batteries. The Mavic 3 drone allows you to fly up to 46 minutes when they’re charged and takes about 2h to charge.

The Avata supports up to 256GB SD cards, it supports MicroSD SDXC or UHS-I cards.

Video and Flight Stabilization

The Avata comes equipped with an adjustable 4K camera which will give you impressive-looking footage, the camera comes with 3-axis self-stabilizing gimbal technology, it will provide clear pictures and smooth videos and will keep the footage steady.

The image quality on the DJI Avata is really good, it offers pretty natural colors and the sensor provides a 12.8-stop dynamic range that retains more details in highlights and shadow.

The camera uses a FOV of 155° wide-angle lens which gives an expanded FOV. The Avata uses an aperture of f/2.8 and comes equipped with a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor which produces good quality. 

The DJI Avata uses RockSteady 2.0 and HorizonSteady stabilization which keeps your videos smooth. 

The Avata uses 2T2R omnidirectional antennas for stability and responsiveness when you are flying to enjoy smooth flying and features DJI’s flagship O3+ video transmission for real-time view in your goggles, even in environments with interference.

Battery

As for the battery, the Avata comes with a rechargeable 2420 mAh 15V battery which you can charge with the USB Battery Charger, which can last about 18 minutes, it will take about 2h to charge them.

The battery is situated inside the drone with access on the back, where there is a cover that gives access to the battery. You can also always buy separate batteries for it and change them whenever the first battery runs out.

The Avata drone comes with a single battery, if you plan on recording for a long time you can get a 2n battery so you can change them quickly and keep recording whenever the first one runs out for a much longer flight.

Design

The Avata has an elegant lightweight design, the Avata’s design is different than most of DJI’s drones, it is well built with good quality plastics that feel pretty resistant, and it has a nice black color. 

Its design is a compact quadcopter with 4 propellers with built-in propeller guards, it feels pretty tough and can resist a bit of wind. The Avata being light and agile makes it easy to carry and to fly.

The dimensions of the DJI Avata are 18 × 18 × 8 cm (7 x 7 x 3.2 in) and its weight is 410g (0.8 lbs).

Besides having strong propeller guards the DJI Avata comes with a downward obstacle sensing system, the sensors have a downward binocular vision and ToF infrared sensing which detect obstacles below the drone.

Modes and Features

The DJI Avata comes with many modes and features to improve your flying experience and make it more enjoyable for beginners.

The DJI Avata’s most important feature is the ability to control the drone in FPV (First Person View) with the goggles. Experience the flight in total immersion.

The Return home mode. One-touch low-power return or out-of-range return. Whether your drone loses connection to the transmitter or runs low power, the Avata drone is designed to safely return to you.

The Halt and Hover mode is an emergency mode where the drone will execute a complete stop and hover in the place it stopped reducing any risk of an accident.

The Turtle mode is a feature where the drone will turn over with a few simple taps and will spring back into action. 

The remote controller on the DJI Avata can be changed and is compatible with different types of remote controllers to best suit your style of flying. The Avata also comes with DJI Goggles to experience the First Person View.

To be able to use the DJI Avata on your smartphone you need the DJI smartphone app that you can easily install and take control of the drone and fly with it and control its features and modes.

My opinion

The DJI Avata drone is currently being crowned as one of the best FPV drones you can find, I definitely recommend getting it if you are looking for a high-end First-Person View drone. As for the video recording aspect the Avata offers up to 4K video with great image quality.

If you plan on getting this drone you should remember it takes time to practice especially to get those amazing professional FPV shots everyone tries to achieve. But at the same time, it’s a fun hobby to learn to fly this drone, and doesn’t feel like a chore to have to practice to get better at flying.

DJI has risen the bar with the DJI Avata and with the many positive reviews, and in my opinion, I recommend getting it if you are looking for a great FPV drone, we hope this review was helpful.
