How deep can a GoPro go underwater

One of the most popular features of action cameras like GoPro is the ability to record underwater. On most action cameras you require a case to be able to go underwater, old GoPro models as well, but the new GoPro’s are submersible without the underwater housing.

You can safely submerge all of the HERO cameras from Hero 5 and above up to 33ft (10m). Even though your GoPro might already be and submersible as it comes. But if you are looking for maximum protection and being able to go even deeper with your GoPro, you can an extra underwater housing. this case is all you need. It also protects it from mud, dirt and everything else which can get you GoPro dirty.

With extra housing, you don’t have to worry about whether the camera breaks during extreme activities. And it can be submerged up to 40 m, perfect for diving in deep waters.

Other tips for filming underwater

Using an ND Filter
If you want to record videos underwater with the right colors in deep waters,it’s recommended you use an ND filter. To record in shallow water, with a depth of fewer than 10 meters underwater, you don’t need a filter. Most divers that go deep underwater use ND filters to get good looking shots. Prevent lens from fogging
GoPro lenses fog up due to moisture condensation inside the camera. But you can avoid it with some anti-fog inserts, they are used to prevent the action camera from fogging inside the case. You can use them in cold or humid climates to avoid excess moisture building up on your lens and inside the GoPro housing. Inserts can be used multiple times. Without avoiding the fog, you will not be able to record the videos as crisp as you want.

Using a good accessory
Using you hands when recording underwater will give you bad results and you will get shaky footage. Therefore, you should use the right accessory to mount your GoPro will help keep your hands free during diving and take pictures without any movement or other interruptions.

There are different types of mounting accessories to choose from based on convenience and needs. You can use a selfie stick or a camera platform or a similar mounting bracket. Divers using the GoPro Reach can use the Diving Scuba mask with GoPro support to capture the best underwater photography. The position of the camera that takes the video will be from the head so you can capture everything you see. If you want to record everything that happens, the chest support is another great option.

Settings
When recording underwater the resolution is a very important setting, 4K will give you the best results with the most details, if you have the newer GoPro’s you will also have the ability to slow-motion in 4K since it comes with 60fps, if not you can always lower the resolution to 2.7K and get great slow-motion shots which look amazing underwater. A recommended field of view is wide or even super-view. These are the standard-settings to capture high-resolution videos. However, more experienced divers can try a faster or slower frame rate to control the movement of the video as they prefer. Expert photographers often shoot with 4k resolution to facilitate processing during zooming, processing, etc.

You should also make sure you are shooting at the right time with good light, the best time to shoot underwater with your action camera is any time when the sun is very bright, you can get even better results if there are no clouds to get the most brightness.

If you are going scuba-diving or going deeper you will lose some sunlight so it’s recommended that you get some extra lights for your action camera.
