Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition Review

Insta360 has released its new camera the new ONE RS Twin Edition, an action camera capable of 4K resolution and 360º videos, up to 48MP pictures, and improved stabilization. Insta360 is one of the biggest producers in the action camera market with GoPro with some of the most successful cameras, especially on sites such as Amazon.

The new ONE RS Twin Edition’s most impressive feature is the ability to change the lens and transform a 4K wide lens camera into a 360º camera by just swapping the lens, the only action camera that has the ability to do this and makes the price worth it.

But before we talk about its features, what comes in the box of the Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition? Inside the box, we can find:

  • Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition
  • 4K Wide Angle Mod
  • Dual-Lens 360 Mod

Design

The design of the Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition is very unique being capable of changing the lens, the design and size changes with every different lens.

Like all the new GoPros the Hero 11 can also go underwater without the waterproof housing, it can go underwater up to 10m (33feet). The Hero 11 also comes with a front screen like the previous model the Hero 10, which is perfect for vloggers and to set up your shot perfectly without having to look at the back screen, and with the new GP2, the screen is much more responsive.

On the front, we can see the lens, the microphone, and the front screen. On the upper side, there is the shutter button similar to most cameras, on the left side, there is the microSD compartment slot, the battery compartment, and the USB-C-Port connector, on the right side, there is the mode button to turn off and on the cam or change settings as well as the drain microphone, most of them can be changed with the touchscreen.

The dimensions of the Insta360 are: 70 x 49 x 32 mm (2.7 x 1.9 x 1.2 inch) with the Boost lens, 70 x 49 x 43 mm (2.7 x 1.9 x 1.7 inch) with the 360º lens, and 79 x 56 x 47 mm (2.7 x 2.2 x 1.8 inch) with the Wide angle lens. Its weight is 125g to 163g depending on the lens (4.4 ounces to 5.7 ounces).

Technical Specifications

The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition can record 5.7K with the 360º lens and 4K at 60fps with the wide lens, for the photos it can shoot 48MP photos with the new 8:7 aspect ratio, it shoots using a 170° super wide-angle lens with an opening of F1.8.

For stabilization, it uses FlowState stabilization which supports up to 5.7K to keep the video smooth.

The Hero 11 like the previous models comes with a Wi-Fi connection, I found it’s a bit faster to connect thanks to the new processor. The app connects with the GoPro smartphone app to control the camera through your phone or enjoy hands-free control of your camera via simple voice commands. The GoPro App can also automatically back up footage to GoPro’s cloud subscription service (over Wi-Fi).

In the back we can find the IPS 1.9″ color LCD screen with Live Preview and status, the screen is as big as last year’s GoPro, very responsive, and easy to playback your videos or change settings.

The Audio Features of the Hero 11 are 3.5mm Audio Mic Input with Media Mod for Hero 11 Black. It can also capture RAW Audio Capture (.wav Format) and has Advanced Wind-Noise Reduction.

The Insta360 ONE RS does come with a 64GB SD card but if you plan on using another Micro SD card you should format it before using it. Micro SD card must be exFAT formatted microSD cards with the UHS-I bus interface and Video Speed Class V30 rating (exactly this class, neither higher nor lower) with a max storage of 1TB are recommended.

Battery

The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition uses a removable 1445mAh lithium battery. The battery can last up to 80 minutes recording in 4K resolution. It takes about 70 minutes to charge back up when powered off.

The ONE RS battery capacity is 21% bigger than the ONE R battery. The batteries can work with temperatures from -20º to 40°C (-4º to 104°F).

The battery is situated on the bottom of the Insta360, where a cover gives access to the battery. The Insta360 ONE RS comes with 1 battery, I recommend getting a second one so you can change them quickly and keep recording whenever the first one runs out.

Stabilization

Like other Insta360 ONE cameras the RS Twin Edition comes with FlowState stabilization, Insta360 has mastered stabilization these last years and FlowState stabilization keeps your footage very smooth while filming.

The FlowState stabilization is one of the best stabilization out there almost as good as GoPro’s HyperSmooth 5.0. The Insta360 ONE also comes with Horizon Lock, which levels shots, no matter how much you tilt your cam. All three lenses support 360 horizon leveling.

FlowState stabilization is a game-changer, at least for action cameras and gimbal users, it works great and can smooth the shot massively and eliminate the need for gimbals. The one negative side of the stabilization is the small cropping you get while recording, but it’s worth it.

Photography

The new Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition comes with an improved megapixel size thanks to the new image sensor, the can shoot pictures up to 48MP, and thanks to the higher resolution we get a lot more detail in the pictures.

The image quality is pretty good but not perfect, you are able to change multiple settings for the pictures such as the possibility to change the ISO, shutter speed, and exposure time, and with patience, we can work interesting images.

The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition has different modes to take pictures: Active  HDR, 4K Boost lens, 360 lens, and Wide angle lens. The Insta360 shoots with JPG by default but you have the option of shooting in RAW format to get a lot more detail in post-production.

Video

The video’s resolutions change depending on the lens you use on the Insta360, up to 5.7K resolution on the 360º lens and up to 4K on the usual wide angle lens. The videos captured with this action camera are stored in .mov format under the H.264 (common codec for most cameras) or H.265 (new codec that allows greater video compression).

The quality of the Insta360 ONE RS is pretty good, it achieves good natural colors and nice sharpness in the videos but in comparison with the new  Hero 11, it still has a bit to go to be as good in video quality.

The Insta 360 ONE RS  comes with multiple settings you can change to get your desired looks, you can change between the different resolution and FPS options, we also have shutter speed control, ISO, sharpness, exposure compensation, color profile, and other adjustments that affect the sound and stabilization.

The Insta 360 comes with different color configurations:

  • Vivid: the most common and saturated of the 3, most similar to that of GoPro
  • Standard: the basic color profile
  • LOG: flat colors, for post-editing, perfect for the most detailed and professional.

Audio:

The audio of the Insta360 ONE RS is pretty decent and captures clear audio and clean voices, the mic comes with wind reduction to help with windy days, as well as directional enhancement.

The video resolutions of the Insta360 ONE RS are the following:

4K Boost Lens:

  • 4K at 24fps/ 25fps /30fps /50fps /60fps
  • 2.7K at 24fps/ 25fps /30fps /60fps /100fps

Features

The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition has multiple features to improve your films and make your videos stand out. With these different modes, filming becomes more fun.

Invisible Selfie Stick mode allows you to record yourself in a Third-Person View, the 360 Lens makes the Invisible Selfie Stick totally disappear from your shots and removes the ugly stick from the video for impossible drone-like footage.

Horizon Lock Perfectly level shots, no matter how much you tilt your cam. All three lenses support 360° horizon leveling.

Slow Mo. The Insta 360 One comes with high frame rates which allows you to slow the footage down and create a slow-motion effect.

Instant Zoom allows us to digitally zoom in while recording up to 2.7x on a subject without the need to set up your shot in advance.

Auto Frame, just by tapping and adding a keyframe you can change the perspective as you like. You can tap a person, animal, or anything else and the AI will do the rest, tracking your target to keep it center-frame. The AI also has an Auto Frame mode which automatically finds the best parts of your 360 videos for you and frames them.

Deep Track 2.0 works by tracking your target by tapping a person, animal, or whatever your subject is, and AI will do the rest and keep it center frame.

Shot Lab can create awesome video effects with the help of AI. Cloning, hyperlapses, barrel rolls, stop motion. Just import your 360 footage, choose an effect and that’s it!

Should you buy it?

The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition is the best 360º action camera so far, being upgraded from the Insta360 ONE, if you are looking for an action camera that can do everything the ONE RS Twin Edition is the perfect sports cam for you.

Compared with the new GoPro Hero 11, the ONE RS doesn’t achieve the same video quality as the GoPro being slightly less and slightly worse stabilization by very little.

Saying said this, the Insta360 is a more complete sports camera being able to record both 360º degree videos and the typical wide-angle sports cam videos. You can edit all your pictures and videos on the Insta360 app which works great, possibly the most complete.
