How to change an action camera battery

The batteries on most action cameras don’t last a long time in general, with some exceptions, so knowing how to change the battery on one or getting an extra battery for it is a great idea.

On most sports camera the battery will be on the lower part of your camera, to remove it you need to pull the battery door up to remove it or slide it out when the battery door is open you will probably have a little plastic piece to pull out the battery. When you are done to put it back inside you just need to slide it back inside or connect the battery door to how it was before. And that’s it your done! But continue reading for some useful tips for action batteries.

If you have any of the new GoPro action cameras you should know that saltwater will do bad things to your cameras such as making the battery and micro SD door hard to open with tiny grains of sand inside the little cracks and openings. So I would recommend you buy a waterproof case even if the GoPro is already waterproof.

Some action cameras have built-in cameras, for example, the Hero5 Session, in this case, you can’t change the battery.

Should you get an extra battery?

If you need more battery you can always buy more batteries, so you can quickly change it when it’s running out and charge up fast with a battery charger (sold separately).

If you want to get an extra battery we recommend getting the originally produced battery from the brand, as they are the ones that perform the best and last the longest, even though the white brand’s ones might cost a little less.

Here are some recommendations I have picked for your action camera since most of them are compatible with each other.

How to make action cameras last longer

If we want to save battery on the GoPro Hero 7 we can by adjusting the brightness level on the back, with the screen that we can control the video settings, picture settings as well as battery level. And at the bottom the access cover to the removable battery.

Remember to keep your action cameras updated with the new firmware since some of you might be missing out on an update that improves the battery lifetime.

Other ways to improve your sports camera’s battery life is by changing the camera settings, each action camera is different but they have similar settings:

  • The resolution

Lowering the resolution can help improve the battery life since your camera will have to put less effort to record a video, of course, if you want the best quality possible you should always use the highest resolution.

  • Screen Brightness

The brightness is another key factor to improve the battery. Reducing the brightness will make the battery consume less on the screen and therefore improving battery life. Not every action camera has this setting but most action cameras especially the new ones for example the new GoPro’s have the setting to reduce the screen brightness or even turn it off.

  • Wi-fi or smartphone connection

Wi-fi and Bluetooth and other connections are other key factors to improve battery life. These features although are very useful they consume a lot of battery, so turning them off is definitely something you need to do to improve your battery life.

  • LED’s

Most action cameras have LED lights to indicate if your recording or to indicate certain things. If you turn these LEDs off you can save some extra battery life.

  • Sounds

Most action cameras make a noise when you change video mode or the settings, they don’t consume a lot of battery but if you turn them off you can save some extra battery.

  • Use the Auto-Off option

Many of us forget to turn off our cameras after shooting and this is a waste of battery. If you are one of those people who always forgets to turn off the camera and end up seeing the low battery indication after a while, you have to activate the automatic power offsetting. All you have to do is go to the settings menu and then click the button 13 times until the option to select the number of seconds you would like to give the camera until it automatically turns off. You can choose between 60, 120, and 300 seconds.

Which action cameras have the best batteries

Drift Ghost X

The Drift Ghost X is an amazing sports camera specially made to make videos on motorbikes but it’s also a great camera for easily capturing excursions and adventures in 1080p Full HD with just a single click. The battery can go up to 5 hours.

It’s a perfect camera for bikers. It is small enough not to be very noticeable when fixed to a helmet, it has a 300° rotating lens and it allows it to be mounted in any orientation and easily align the shot as desired, there is little resistance from wind and the operation is simple and swift. Also, we recommend checking out the Drift Ghost 4K, it’s a little more expensive but a better version of this one.

The GoPro Hero 9, a new action camera capable of 5K resolution with 30fps, more battery time, and a lot of new better specs! GoPro is one of the biggest producers in the action camera market with some of the most successful models especially on sites such as Amazon, in this blog, we review the GoPro Hero 9 a powerful high-end sports cam. The Hero 9 also comes with dual screens, the classic one in the back, and a new screen in the front perfect for self-recording.

The GoPro Hero 9 uses a 1720mAh 3.7V battery which is quite good, not having a touch screen or front LCD panel, it will save us battery. The battery can last up to 180 minutes recording 1080p Full HD video, with the WiFi and screen turned off. In the case of capturing 5K video, battery life will drop dramatically.
